In this modern world full of woes, it’s easy to be increasingly disenchanted with life. As a veteran pessimist, I came out of the womb a little bit disenchanted and, like a mycelium network, my contempt for people grows a bit every day if left unchecked. I think the wrinkle on my forehead was probably stamped there by the gods long before I had any agency in the process. And that’s okay. Not everyone can be a Winnie the Pooh. Some of us are destined to be Eeyore, and I like to think that it evens all of us out. A little of this, a little of that…. Balance. But lately, being morose is starting to get freaking exhausting.

I think a part of it is the situation I find myself in. It’s easy to see the worst in people when that’s what you’re constantly exposed to. Working in the education system in an underprivileged area means a lot of heartbreak. A lot of wishing I could do more, or wishing I could change people’s attitudes. At some point, I realised that maybe it was actually me who needed to change. There is a lot of sadness and heartbreak in the world, but perseverating on that all the time is like putting blinders on to the beauty that exists all around us.
